Zinfandel declined in popularity in the mid 1980's and became unprofitable to grow until "White Zinfandel" was introduced. White Zinfandel is a Zinfandel rose that is left slightly sweet with an acid balance. (TRY A GERMAN RIESLING IF YOU LIKE WHITE ZIN!) Real Zinfandel, the red wine, is the quintessential California red. It can also be used for blending with other grapes, including Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah. It has been made in a claret style, with berry and cherry flavors, mild tannins and oak shadings. At its best, Zinfandel can and often does produce shining wines that are ready to drink when only a couple of years old. Recent DNA tests indicate that Zinfandel is actually the same as the Primitivo grape found in Italy.
