$34(free s/h) Wine has been produced on the Couranconne property since 1000AD, when Carthusian Nuns tended the fertile vineyards in the Rhone Valley. The Domain Changed hands numerous times, included when the Bishop of Orange annexed the vineyards in 1735 after a Papal Decree. After the French Revolution in 1789 when most property was taken away from the church, the vineyards were sold to Sir Correnson, Lord of Pecoulette and in the custom of Provence; he gave his name to the vineyards. Today the vineyards are still privately owned and a blending of traditional practices (they still use a wooden hand press) and new technology (stainless steel tanks) provide the winery with exceptional wines such as the Gold Medal winery from the Rasteau vineyards. Blended with 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah, the Couranconne 'Magnificat' is a perfect wine to drink in its youth as the vibrant red Grenache fruit mingles perfectly with the darker and more tannic Syrah racy palate and a prolonged finish.
